Following the principle of sharing today’s stories later today, I want to tell you about a couple of senior adult ladies who are members of The Church at Brook Hills. I just found out they have caught a vision of the possible.
As I mentioned in a previous post, our church hosted a People Group Discovery and Engagement workshop. Part of this training involved us in the streets of Birmingham for four hours on a Saturday. Some of the women spent time in a nail salon talking with the Asian women working there.
Over the past several months, these two ladies have visited a particular salon for manicures–a salon complete with its shrine to Buddha (common in Asian owned/operated businesses)–and connected with the employees and the owner. Recognizing many of the employees are from an unreached people and are having a difficult time with English, these two ladies decided to volunteer to teach the employees English. No, they are not attempting to get the ladies to come out of their place of employment and visit our church’s property. They approached the owner about having the training in the shop, to which he was extremely excited and grateful. He offered to pay them; they declined. They want to help these women and share life with them. Lord willing, they start next month. Pray for them.
I am so proud of these ladies.
They prayed with eyes wide open as they went about their daily routine.
They saw a need and decided to reach out and serve others.
They are sharing what they have.
They did not ask their pastors for permission (Can they do that?).
They did not form a committee for discussion.
They just did.
Is this possible? Can connecting with the strangers next door be so easy? Maybe it’s time for me to get my nails done.

Wonderful! I love when churches trust their people to minister to each other and the world. And don’t put up a hundred road blocks to ensure that the ladies lose their energy and vision before any actual ministry happens. Thanks for sharing the story.

Some of my best ‘theological’ visits have occurred in nail salons and doctor’s offices. When the conversation is about Jesus and setting captives free the conversation is sweet.
