Ruth Tucker writes, “Shrouded in legend and glorified by sainthood, Patrick, Ireland’s great fifth-century missionary is one of the most misrepresented figures in church history” (From Jerusalem to Irian Jaya, 37).
On this first episode of Strike the Match, we are discussing, “Who was St. Patrick and what can we learn for today?” I felt this would be a very appropriate topic with St. Patrick’s Day around the corner.
My guest is Dr. Ed Smither, professor of intercultural studies at Columbia International University. Ed’s next book is Missionary Monks, so he has much to share about Patrick.
Find out more about Ed on Twitter or his blog.

A really fascinating and inspiring podcast. I am interested to understand and reflect more about what this monastic pattern might look like in C21 mission practice, especially during Covid and post-pandemic. I live in Ireland, but am working fully in a mission context – was in Japan, now ‘mobilisation’ for diaspora mission. Last week I reflected much more than usual on Patrick’s story and was asking myself what we can learn and implement. Thankyou for providing such a helpful discussion. I also watched JD Payne’s short video on Patrick: Man, Motives and Methods and tandem with this podcast, that was also very helpful
Thank you, Laura-Jane, for your kind words and ministry. I agree with you; there is much to learn from some of Patrick’s work. Keep up the great Kingdom labors!
