My Study in Lamentations

The best missiologists are outstanding theologians and the best theologians are outstanding missiologists. One thing I fear for readers of this blog–including myself–is that we will attempt to be great missiologists and think we can leave that theological stuff up to the theologians. May it never be! We need to immerse ourselves in theological writings and biblical studies–even if sometimes such authors have little missiological insight.

I am about to complete a study of Lamentations. Earlier this year, I decided I would find a good commentary and work my way through a less familiar book of the Bible. Not during my daily devotion time, just something else.

I try to do this each year for both personal devotion and growth in biblical and theological knowledge. Proverbs was my study last year.

Try it. Give yourself a year. It will not take that long with a brief book like Lamentations. You will find it a blessing. Plus, it will give you a good reason to add another book to your library.

(BTW, the commentary I selected this year is Christopher J. H. Wright’s new work with IVP Academic, The Message of Lamentations. Wright uses his missiological lens. This is an excellent work, easy to read, and concise. Worth your read.)
