That was the question I heard on the monitor as I walked through an airport today. The news anchor was asking the interviewee if he had made history on the day of the interview. I did not stick around to hear the nature of the conversation or what he did that caused the interviewer to ask such a question (I was too interested in getting a cup of coffee.).
“Making history” or “history making” is a strange set of words. They are often associated with epic events, pivots in time in which a way of thought or action changes. They cause us to think of paradigm-shifts.
But in reality, such is not the full truth behind history making events. Such moments in time and actions are often preceded by other important, albeit smaller, maters. And, as Kingdom citizens, we should be making history every day.
Our acts of obedience as the Spirit guides is related to a plan established before the foundation of the world–a plan related to the restoration of all things. We may look at the great awakenings of unbelievers and great revivals of the saints as historic moments, but the daily labors of ordinary, Spirit-filled believers preceded those grand results.
We are quick to see the tree with all of its branches and birds’ nests, but we forget that the Kingdom of God is like a mustard seed.
So, did you make history today? Did your prayers, words, giving, actions, meditations, worship have anything to do with the advancement of the Kingdom as we await the beautiful picture described in Revelation? If you are a Kingdom citizen, you should be making history all the time. And knowing that part of our responsibility is to make history and make it often is a godly motivator for getting out of bed each day.
